How much do we spend on defence?
225 billion. But that doesn’t say much, does it? How much do we spend as an average citizen per month? 1,771 SEK. That is how much we spend today. It is an increase from 610 SEK five years ago.
I am certainly not saying this is money wasted or that it shouldn’t be spent this way – we do have a hostile country to the east with far-reaching plans for a major war that will involve Sweden. It is, however, a sacrifice we make.
How did we calculate this? We took the entire defence appropriation, divided it by the population for the respective year and divided that by 12. So we also include groups that do not pay tax in our definition of population. Talking about billions is meaningless when the average person cannot relate to what a billion is, but if you break it down to see what we spend per person and month, the figures become tangible.
