ExcelMap – see how your Excel workbook fits together
ExcelMap draws an interactive map of how sheets, formulas, named ranges, charts, pivot tables, VBA modules and links to other workbooks fit together. Drop in one or more Excel files, click a sheet and see what it gets its data from and what depends on it. The tool is free, requires no account, is available in Swedish and English, and your file never leaves your computer.
What ExcelMap shows
- Which sheets get data from which other sheets (blue lines) and which ones use them (orange lines).
- Links to other workbooks, so that you find external dependencies before you move, share or send a file.
- Named ranges, charts, pivot tables, Power Query and data connections that tie the workbook together.
- VBA modules: which sheets each module reads from or writes to, and how the modules call each other.
- Several files at once, so that you see how a whole folder of workbooks fits together.
This makes it easier to troubleshoot a heavy model, review a workbook someone else has built, document a calculation flow or prepare a restructuring.
How to use ExcelMap
- Drag one or more .xlsx or .xlsm files into the box above, or click to choose files.
- Wait while the map is built. The first time, the tool’s engine is downloaded, about 10 MB, and a large workbook can take one to two minutes.
- Click a sheet or a module to see what it reads from and what uses it. The Legend and Details buttons show and hide explanations and details. Switch language with the SV and EN buttons.
- Save the map as a standalone HTML file with the Download map (HTML) button.
Your file stays with you
ExcelMap reads the file directly in your browser. The workbook is not uploaded to Exceldepartment or any other server, and we store neither files nor maps. Nothing is calculated, updated or run in the file. Macros and VBA code are only read to see which sheets they affect; they are never run. This means you can use the tool even on workbooks containing sensitive financial information.
Frequently asked questions about ExcelMap
Does ExcelMap cost anything?
No. The tool is free and you do not need an account.
Which files work?
Workbooks in the .xlsx and .xlsm formats. Older formats such as .xls and .xlsb are not supported. We have tested a 22 MB workbook with 68 sheets and VBA, and recommend files up to about 50 MB.
Is the VBA code shown?
No. The map shows which modules exist, how large they are and which sheets they affect, but not the code itself.
Does ExcelMap change my workbook?
No. The file is only read. The original is never changed.
Is the tool available in English?
Yes. Switch between Swedish and English with the SV and EN buttons in the tool.
Does it work on mobile?
The tool is built for desktop. It can be opened on a mobile phone, but the map becomes hard to get an overview of.
