You are good at Excel. Colleagues ask you for help. You solve problems quickly. But when you apply for jobs, recruiters ask “Can you prove your Excel skills?” or your manager requires documented competence for a promotion. Suddenly it is not enough to actually be able to do it – you have to be able to show that you can.

Excel certification from Microsoft (called MOS – Microsoft Office Specialist) is the official way to prove your skills. But is it worth the time and money? This guide shows what certification involves, what it costs, how to prepare and when it actually adds value.

What is Excel certification?

Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) is Microsoft’s official certification programme for Office products, including Excel.

Certification levels for Excel

Microsoft offers three levels:

1. MOS Excel Associate (Basic) – Covers basic Excel functions – Managing workbooks, cells, tables – Basic formulas and charts – Data entry and formatting

2. MOS Excel Expert (Advanced) – Advanced formulas and functions – Pivot tables and data analysis – Macros and automation (basic) – Advanced data handling

3. MOS Excel Expert Plus (Office 365) – The latest features in Excel 365 – Power Query and Power Pivot – Advanced data modelling – Collaboration features

What is tested?

Practical skills, not theory: – You are given tasks to solve in real Excel – 35-50 tasks in 50 minutes – Everything from “format this cell” to “build a pivot table” – You actually have to be able to do it, not just know about it

Pass mark: – 700 points out of 1000 (70%) – The result is shown immediately after the exam – A digital certificate is issued within a few days

What does Excel certification cost?

Direct costs

Exam fee: – MOS Excel Associate: approx. SEK 1,500 – MOS Excel Expert: approx. SEK 1,800 – Retake (if you fail the first time): same price

Preparation: – Self-study (free – books/YouTube): SEK 0 – Official practice test: SEK 300-500 – Preparation course: SEK 2,000-4,000 – Self-study book: SEK 300-500

Total cost: – Without a course: SEK 1,800-2,500 – With a preparation course: SEK 4,000-6,500

Indirect costs

Time: – Preparation: 20-40 hours (depending on your current level) – The exam itself: 2-3 hours (including check-in) – Total time investment: 25-45 hours

Opportunity cost: – What could you have done with that time? – Is a certificate more important than practical experience?

When is certification worth it?

Certification is not for everyone. But in some situations it is invaluable.

Certification adds real value when

You are looking for work: – Recruiters filter on “Excel certification” in their system – Competition is fierce and you need to stand out – The employer requires documented competence – You are changing industry and lack relevant experience

HR specialist, Stockholm: “I had used Excel for 5 years but when I applied for a new job everyone wanted proof. The MOS Excel Expert certificate opened doors to interviews I would otherwise not have got.”

You work as a consultant: – Clients require documented competence – Certification gives credibility with new clients – Raises your value and hourly rate – Differentiates you from unqualified competitors

Your employer requires it: – For a certain promotion or role – To work with sensitive data – Organisational requirements (public authority, larger company) – Part of a skills development plan

You want structured progression: – A clear goal to aim for – Motivates you to learn properly – Confirms that you actually can do it (not just think you can)

Certification does NOT add value when

You already work in-house: – Your manager and colleagues know you are good at Excel – Promotion is based on results, not certificates – Nobody cares about paper, only whether you solve problems

You have a strong practical track record: – Clear examples of what you have achieved – A portfolio of Excel projects – Recommendations from previous employers/clients

The cost is too high: – The budget does not allow SEK 4,000-6,500 – The time (40 hours) can be better used – The opportunity cost is too great

You don’t actually know Excel: – Certification without competence is meaningless – Learn properly first, certify afterwards – False credibility will be exposed in practice

How do you prepare for Excel certification?

Assess your current level

For Associate level: Can you: – [ ] Create and format tables professionally? – [ ] Use basic formulas (SUM, AVERAGE, IF, COUNT)? – [ ] Create simple pivot tables? – [ ] Build basic charts? – [ ] Sort and filter data?

For Expert level: Can you: – [ ] Use VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, SUMIFS? – [ ] Build advanced pivot tables with calculated fields? – [ ] Use Power Query for data import? – [ ] Create named ranges and tables? – [ ] Build complex formulas with several functions?

If you answered yes to all: You are probably ready. If you answered no to 3 or more: You need more preparation.

Study strategically

1. Take an official practice test first – Shows exactly what is tested – Identifies your knowledge gaps – Gives a feel for the exam format and time limit

2. Focus on gaps – Don’t waste time on things you already know – Dive deep into what you haven’t mastered – Practical training, not theoretical reading

3. Use official material – Microsoft’s own exercises cover exactly the right things – Third-party books may cover the wrong content – Certcommunity.org has good resources

4. Practise under a time limit – 50 minutes for 35-50 tasks is tight – You must be quick, not just correct – Train for speed without sacrificing accuracy

Preparation options

Self-study (SEK 0-1,000, 30-40 hours): – Use Microsoft’s free resources – YouTube tutorials for specific topics – Practice exams to identify gaps

Suits you if: – You are self-disciplined – You already know Excel fairly well – Your budget is limited

Preparation course (SEK 2,000-4,000, 20-30 hours): – A structured review of everything that is tested – An instructor answers questions – Official practice exams included

Suits you if: – You want guidance – You find it hard to motivate yourself to self-study – You want to be sure of passing on the first attempt

Combined with an Excel course (often included): – Many course providers include certification preparation – You learn Excel AND prepare for the exam at the same time – Often the best value if you are going to take a course anyway

How the exam works

Book the exam

Via Pearson VUE (Microsoft’s test partner): – Book online at pearsonvue.com – Choose a test centre (available in most larger cities) – Choose a date and time – Pay the exam fee

Lead time: – Book at least 2-4 weeks in advance – Popular times (afternoons, weekends) get booked quickly

Exam day

What you need to bring: – Valid ID (passport or driving licence) – Booking confirmation (usually just a reference number)

What you may NOT bring: – Phone, smartwatch – Notes or books – Any kind of aid

What to expect: – Arrive 15 minutes early – Security check-in (empty your pockets, photograph) – You get paper and a pen for notes – Camera monitoring

During the exam: – 50 minutes, 35-50 tasks – Work in a real Excel environment – You cannot skip tasks and come back to them – No break

After the exam: – Result immediately on screen – Pass: 700+ points – Fail: Shows which areas you failed on – Digital certificate within 5 working days

After certification

Use the certificate strategically

Add it to: – Your LinkedIn profile (Microsoft has an integration) – Your CV under “Certifications” or “Skills” – Your email signature (if relevant to your role) – Your company profile (consultants)

Mention it when: – You are applying for work that requires Excel – You are pitching to clients (consultants) – You are applying for a promotion – You are going to lead Excel projects

Do NOT mention it when: – It is not relevant to the situation – Practical experience is more important – It would look like boasting in the context

Keep your skills up to date

MOS certificates do not formally expire, but: – Excel evolves (new features in 365) – A certificate from Excel 2013 is less relevant in 2026 – Consider recertifying every 3-5 years

Keep developing: – A certificate proves what you could do on exam day – Practical use keeps your skills alive – Keep learning new features and methods

Is it worth it? The conclusion

Excel certification is worth it if: – You are looking for work and competition is fierce – You work as a consultant and need credibility – Your employer requires it – You want structured progression in your learning – The cost (time + money) is reasonable for you

Excel certification is NOT worth it if: – You already have a job and your competence is proven – Your practical track record is strong – The cost is too high relative to the benefit – You don’t actually master Excel (learn first)

Our recommendation: If you are unsure, first focus on actually becoming good at Excel through practical training. Certification is the icing on the cake, not the cake itself.
