In American media there has been quite a lot of talk about ”the K-shaped economy”, i.e. that those who are doing well get better off, while those who are doing worse get worse off. We looked at statistics on Swedes’ share portfolios and debts at the Swedish Enforcement Authority (Kronofogden). Here we see a clear K shape: portfolio value is rising, while debts at Kronofogden are doing the same.
Part of this can be explained by pure inflation, but the correlation still remains. For the sake of traceability, and to avoid having to explain how inflation should be applied to, on the one hand, a point-in-time measurement of a portfolio and, on the other, a year’s development of Kronofogden debts, we have kept the unadjusted figures.
